THE NETHERLANDS - The Retail Trade Foundation for Tackling Fraud is calling for shopkeepers to be allowed to report suspected theft among staff to the police digitally.

It is argued the move would not only save shopkeepers time but also benefit the police and judicial authorities. It is believed that many shopkeepers do not to bother to make complaints to the police because of the time involved.

The foundation puts the cost of staff theft at about EUR 165 million a year, with a group of over 4,000 repeat offenders responsible for more than half the amount.

The number of incidents of theft by staff fell slightly 2007, but the value of articles stolen rose.
