Some flights resume at Schiphol Airport

Flights have resumed to a certain extent at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, but there is a problem because of the huge backlog. The snow is also causing problems at other European airports. Dozens of flights were delayed or cancelled at Schiphol Airport on Friday and Saturday due to the wintery conditions.

The airport has warned passengers to check their flights before leaving for the airport. Nevertheless, it is extremely busy at the airport. In the departures lounge, thousands of people are trying to find out when they can get away. Airline personnel are trying to rebook passengers onto other flights. Some passengers have been unable to board departing planes because of the long queues.

Free hot drinks and snacks are being handed out. Earlier the NOS public news broadcaster Radio 1 reported that shops at the airport were having trouble replenishing their stocks.

On Friday night, around 3000 people slept in the departures lounge and behind the passport control because of cancellations. The airline was only able to set up 1700 camp beds. Others had to sleep on reclining seats and benches. It is not clear whether people will be forced to spend another night at the airport.

Schiphol is busier than normal because the Christmas holidays have just begun. Around 350,000 people were expected to pass through the airport this weekend.
