The second stage of Australia’s World Solar Challenge has been halted due to forest fires.

A spokesperson for the Dutch team Solar Team Twente said it was told to stop after covering more than 300 kilometres. The team from the University of Twente in the eastern province of Overijssel is now in a parking lot about 985 kilometres from the city of Darwin.

A second Dutch team from the Delft University of Technology is also taking part in the race. The Delft Nuon Solar Team was in second place, just five minutes behind the team of the Japanese Tokai University.

It is not clear whether the race will start all over again when the fires have been brought under control or whether the times and distances realised sofar will remain valid.
