AMSTERDAM - Friday is the busiest day of the year at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

Around 175,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport, slightly up on 2007's peak figure.

Schiphol has reserved extra parking spaces and hired entertainers in the hope of keeping the queuing travellers in good spirits.

A total of 9.7 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport this summer, 50,000 less than in 2007.
