Additional budget cuts running into the billions of euros will be inevitable in the coming years.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte made his statement after Friday’s weekly cabinet meeting. His cabinet agreed on 18-billion-euros’ worth of budget cuts when it took office in October 2010. An additional 12 billion euros were cut in the budget agreement concluded in the spring. The Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis and the group of senior finance ministry officials say another 20 to 25 billion euros will have to be cut in the coming four years.

“It must be done, there is no alternative,” Mr Rutte said. “Excessive government debt makes this country collectively feel restive. And rightly so, because it leads to a loss of trust and then you would have to take even more draconian measures.”
