The minister for youth and family affairs says it wouldn't hurt if the Dutch started having more children.

AMSTERDAM – The Dutch should be having more babies, says Minister for Youth and Family Affairs André Rouvoet. More children could help cushion the costs of the ageing population, he said in newspaper De Pers.

The average birth rate of 1.7 children could be increased to 2.1, says Rouvoet. Both the coalition parties and opposition responded with reluctance to Rouvoet's urging.

"We mustn't link the birth rate to the ageing of the population," says CDA MP Coskun Çörüz. "The decision to have children should come from love and only from that. We definitely do not want children as a provision for retirement or anything that seems like that."
