ROTTERDAM – Dutch ornithologists celebrated the discovery of a Kuhl's shearwater on a cargo ship in the port of Rotterdam.

Experts believe the seabird, also known as Cory's shearwater, landed on the ship after becoming exhausted somewhere over the Atlantic. The bird has been taken to an avian rescue centre in Rotterdam.

Kuhl's shearwater is extremely rare in Dutch waters and has only been spotted 13 times in the Netherlands since 1860. Cory's or Kuhl's shearwaters breed on the islands in the Mediterranean and migrate to the Atlantic in late summer and autumn.
