Amsterdam - Queen Beatrix opened the renovated Royal Palace in Amsterdam's Dam Square on Saturday morning. Over the last three and a half years, the interior of the palace has been restored and modernised and asbestos removed.

The collection of empire furniture housed at the palace has been enlarged with pieces which once belonged to King Willem I and King Willem II. Items made for the palace in the 19th century have been returned.

The building dates from the early 17th century, when it was Amsterdam's town hall. Nowadays, it is used by the monarch, mainly for state receptions.
