THE NETHERLANDS - Populist politician Rita Verdonk plans to open branches of her right-wing Proud of the Netherlands party in all 443 council districts in the country.

The expansion is designed to ensure the party can contest in as many local council elections as possible in 2010.

In a newsletter to party workers, Verdonk, a former immigration minister, said the long-term plan was to contest both national and council elections. She added that the party was working on its recruitment and selection procedures, and on training programmes for future MPs and councillors.
