The Dutch Socialist Party says rent control measures should be extended to protect small shop owners.

THE NETHERLANDS - The Netherlands' main opposition party, the Socialist Party, has called for measures to protect small shop owners from steep rent increases.

The party is calling for a maximum rental price to be set for shops and restrictions on the amount that rents are allowed to rise per year.

The Socialists say rent control measures should not just be applied to residential tenants.

The party cited the situation in one Amsterdam neighbourhood where shop rents rose astronomically after a large-scale renovation of the area.
