Power cut in Rotterdam

The city centre of the Dutch port of Rotterdam has been without electricity since Tuesday morning. A spokesperson for the grid company Stedin told reporters that some 10,000 households and shops are without power because of a breakdown in a switching substation.

Tram traffic through the city centre has also been disrupted. The cut is affecting the Erasmus Medical Centre, the city's university hospital, but they have switched to electricity produced by their inhouse emergency generators.

Police are reporting no major incidents. Many people in the centre of Rotterdam, usually a hive of economic activity, have gone out on the streets to wait for electric power to return.
