Poor summer, beer sales down

The poor summer weather has affected beer sales. In spite of increasing its turnover after taking over Mexican firm Femsa, Dutch beer brewer Heineken’s profits for the first half of the year are low.

Heineken’s half-yearly figures, which are published today, show turnover was 8.36 billion euros compared to 7.52 billion euros in the same period last year. Analysts had expected slightly higher results.

The brewery's gross operating profit was also lower than expected at 1.259 billion euros, 11 percent up on the same period last year.

Net profits are at almost the same level as 2010 for the first six months of the year at 694 million euros, likewise lower than experts predicted.
