Polish truckers exploited by Dutch firms

Dutch union says Polish drivers are suffering large-scale exploitation at the hands of transport firms in the Netherlands.

“Polish drivers are being paid three euros an hour, while their Dutch counterparts earn 13 euros an hour for the same work,” says FNV’s Edwin Atema.

He alleges that Dutch lorries are registered with “fake companies” abroad so that Polish drivers can be put to work for low wages on routes in the Netherlands. He describes this as an abuse of regulations allowing haulage firms to offer services abroad. “The rules are unclear and are not being monitored.”

The union is launching an investigation into how Dutch transport companies are operating. The results will be passed on to the relevant authorities in the hope that they will institute tougher checks.
