Dutch police say they will give the investigation of child pornography and child sex tourism a higher priority in 2012.

The dedicated national team investigating such offences will be increased from 11 to 40 officers. A police spokesperson said the unit would be homing in more on the production of child pornography.

The police are looking for specialised personnel to join the team and plan to advertise 29 vacancies online at the end of January.

Patricia Zorko, interim head of the national police services agency KLPD, explained that the police have to do more to combat internet crime in general. She said the digital highway was “bursting with opportunities for criminals”.

The dedicated police team dealing with major internet crime will also be increased from 30 to 60 personnel. By 2014, the police want to be able to investigate 20 major cases of internet crime per year. At the moment, the number stands at just five cases per year.
