The man who was at a risk of killing himself became the first person to be shot with a taser gun in the Netherlands.

Woerden – A suicidal man who was apparently in a state of confusion became the first person to be shot with a taser gun in the Netherlands on Sunday.

Police in the western town of Woerden had to shoot the man, who was at a risk of killing himself, with the electroshock gun.

The man, aged 30, pressed a number of knives against his throat while he stood on a balcony.

Despite talking to the man for hours, the police was unable to resolve the situation and had to resort to using the taser gun.

The use of the taser gun is subject to criticism in other countries. In the US a number of detainees died after receiving a shock from the weapon.

The weapon administers a 50,000 voltage shock and causes the victim to temporarily lose control over his muscles.

A 1999 American study found shocks weaker than those administered by the taser could even induce cardiac arrests in people with a heart condition.

Police in Woerden said the man has not suffered any lasting damage from the arrest.

The use of taser guns in the Netherlands is experimental, and limited to seven special arrest teams and the military police. The one-year test period is expected to end in May 2010.
