The quality of open-air swimming water worsened in 2010 compared with the preceding year, according to an annual inspection by the European Environment Agency.

The water of lakes, rivers and beaches was tested for a variety of bacteria, whose concentration exceeded legal levels in more than one place.

Inland swimming water met legal requirements in 84.3 percent of the tested sites, 7.9 percent less than in 2009.

Sea water met legal requirements in 92.2 percent of the tested sites, 3.4 percent less than in 2009.

The worst conditions were found in water near Antwerp, Den Bosch, Rotterdam and Utrecht.

Open air swimming pools were not tested by the European Environment Agency.
