No bling or religious symbols for police

Police officers may not wear flashy accessories or religious symbols. A spokesperson for the Minister of Justice said Wednesday that the ban is in line with the 2008 ‘police lifestyle neutrality’ code of conduct.

Visible tattoos, Mohawk hairstyles and ostentatious earrings all affect an officer’s credibility, according to the code. Jewellery, such as dangling earrings or necklaces, can also be dangerous.

Symbols of religious expression, such as a cross on a chain, are also banned; police should be seen as being there for everyone, said the spokesperson.
