Dutch defence minister says he is not prepared to ban cluster bombs entirely from the armed forces.

THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch defence minister Eimert van Middelkoop says he is not prepared to ban cluster bombs entirely from the armed forces.

In April, the minister announced he would get rid of the most dangerous types of cluster weapons.

Currently, only Apache helicopters are able to use cluster bombs. They are highly controversial because they contain numerous smaller bombs that can kill or injure a long time after the bomb is dropped.

The minister promises to consult parliament first before using them in any specific situation.

The Dutch branch of PaxChristi is urging a total ban on cluster weapons.
