Newspapers report growing circulation

Five national newspapers have been bucking a nation-wide trend of decreasing circulations by realizing substantial growth in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the same period in 2009.Leading the pack were Christian newspaper het Nederlands Dagblad and the left-of-centre de Volkskrant which grew by 5.5 and 4.6 percent respectively.

The above figures were released on Tuesday by HOI, the Dutch institute for media auditing. HOI reported that Dutch publishers distributed a total of 3,436,577 paid printed newspapers, a decrease of 1.8 percent compared to the same period in 2009. Among the free newspapers, De Pers stood out from among its peers by realising a 56.6 percent growth.
