After waiting almost 35 years, Dutch citizens of Surinamese origin can now visit Suriname without restriction for up to three years.

Amsterdam – A new tourist visa became available Tuesday for Dutch citizens of Surinamese origin that will allow them unrestricted access to Suriname for three years.

Harry van Bommel, a spokesman for Surinamese affairs with the Dutch Socialist Party, told Radio Netherlands Worldwide that the move is “a step in the right direction.”

In 1975, the Netherlands signed an agreement with Suriname that would permit Dutch citizens of Surinamese origin free access to the country. It was not activated until now.

The visa costs EUR 165.

According to the Surinamese consulate in Amsterdam, the definition of 'Surinamese origin' means Dutch nationals who were born in Suriname, or who have at least one parent born in Suriname.

Indigenous Dutch people do not qualify for the visa.
