After four years of presenting The Nutcracker in de Grote Kerk Den Haag, the Dutch Don’t Dance Division, a dance company based in The Hague, takes on a new challenge and will bring an oriental fairytale ballet back to life.

Artistic leaders Thom Stuart and Rinus Sprong will create a brand new ballet, based on the original from choreographer August Bournonville, dating from 1855. The music, composed by the Danish composer Holger Simon Paulli will be heard for the first time in The Netherlands and will be performed live by an orchestra of 40 musicians, conducted by Hernán Schvartzman. A true world premiere in The Hague!

The concept of Abdallah is comparable with The Nutcracker: an unique collaboration between professionals and amateurs, ranging from 6 to 65+ in age and two upcoming talents from the American Ballet Theatre New York. This year Marcella Paiva and Irlan Silva will come to The Hague.

Rinus Sprong and Thom Stuart discovered Abdallah during a visit to the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen. They immediately understood that the story is of all times: a fairytale about universal theme’s like greed, love and forgiveness. During the life and time of Abdallah, the port of Basra was a city with a flourishing cultural life and a fertile international community, comparable with a city like nowadays The Hague.

Visual artist Hans Wap from Rotterdam is the set designer.

The poor shoemaker Abdallah and his love Irma hide the wise Sheik Ismael from a violent gang. To show his gratitude the Sheik offers Abdallah four wishes. He chooses beautiful clothes, a wonderful palace and a harem consisting of the most beautiful women.

When Irma sees this, she runs away in anger. Will Abdallah ever find her again?
