The Netherlands - A Dutch Bible translation that appeared in 2004 has sold one million copies. The Dutch Bible Society admits it has been surprised by the sales.

It says the public apparently felt a need to replace the former 1951 translation of the Bible with a contemporary version.

The new translation, which appeared in four different editions, took ten years to complete. The project involved 20 translators as well as 23 churches and religious communities.

As many copies are sold through Christian and evangelical bookshops, the millionth copy was presented on Saturday to the Branch Association of Christian Books and Music.
