Netherlands recognises Libyan rebel council

The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg on Wednesday acknowledged the Libyan opposition National Transitional Council NTC as the “legitimate representative of the Libyan people.”

The decision came after a joint meeting in Brussels between ministers of foreign affairs from the Benelux countries and NTC leader Mahmoud Jibril.

Dutch Minister Uri Rosenthal took part in the consultations, the outcome of which was unexpected. Both the Netherlands and Belgium had previously refused to acknowledge the council, insisting they only recognise countries, not governments.

The NTC is now recognised by 26 countries including the UK and France.
