A record 11.3 million tourists visited the Netherlands in 2011.

The Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions NBTC says the country drew three percent more foreign visitors compared to 2010.

The organisation expects even larger numbers for this year. “ says NBTC Director Jos Vranken. On top of this, the relatively weak euro has made the Netherlands more attractive, while the number of travellers from world's emerging industrial powers is still growing.

The nearly 400,000 additional visitors to the Netherlands in 2011 contributed 160 million euros to a total revenue of 4.5 billion. Most of the increase was indeed due to larger numbers of visitors from Germany and Belgium, but 2011 also saw an increase in the number of US travellers.

However, Mr Vranken notes that NBTC also recorded fewer visitors from the United Kingdom and Japan.

The three-percent growth figure for 2011 is in line with the European average for the tourism sector. Mr Vranken says.
