The Netherlands is in the European Union’s middle bracket where Research and Development spending is concerned.

At issue is the total amount spent by both Dutch businesses and the government. The former score far below the European average, writes the Dutch statistics office in a report published on Tuesday.

Total spending on R&D was at 10.8 billion euros in 2010, compared to 10.4 billion in 2009. When expressed as a percentage of GDP, R&D spending was at 1.83 percent.

The cabinet has announced its intention to increase this percentage to 2.5 percent by 2020, still below the EU 2010 objective of 3 percent of GDP.
