Netherlands divided over role of queen

The Netherlands is deeply divided over the role of the queen. She is now part of the government, but the Freedom Party of Geert Wilders wants to reduce her role to a ceremonial position, so the monarch would have no further involvement in the formation of a government. 48 percent of Dutch voters agree, but 46 percent are against.

This was revealed on Wednesday in a survey by pollster Maurice de Hond, in which 1400 people were questioned. Of the people who voted for the Freedom Party, more than three-quarters 76 percent want to reduce the monarch's current role. That is much more than any other party, even the social-liberal D66 which has always advocated a more limited role for the monarch.

Remarkably, it's Labour voters who are the least supportive of a ceremonial role. Almost three quarters oppose the idea. Amongst voters of the Christian Democrats, often seen as staunch supporters of the House of Orange, 35 percent are in favour of a change and 53 percent against.

In this topsy-turvy new and dangerous world Holland's beloved Queen should just be a ceremonial figure. Let realistic politicians such as the great Geert Wilders decide what's best for Holland's future.
    Long live The Netherlands!
