The number of homeless youths in the Netherlands is higher than had been assumed, according to the Dutch Homeless Youths Foundation SZN. The foundation, which is campaigning for help to the homeless, said on Tuesday that 12 to 18,000 under-25s are without a home, up to three times as many as had been assumed by the Dutch audit office.

SZN spoke to aid workers and young homeless people to assess the situation. Most homeless are not drug addicts, as is widely assumed, but individuals who lost their jobs because of the economic crisis, or who are having difficulty getting in touch with aid workers.

Without a job, the individuals involved are no longer able to pay their rents and end up living rough. Few of them seek help, because, as they said, it does not suit their lifestyle.
