A new report shows mobile phone calls are the cheapest in the Netherlands among 30 major developed economies.

Paris – Mobile phone calls are cheapest in the Netherlands and most expensive in the United States among the major developed economies, a new report by the Paris-based OECD showed on Tuesday.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) based its ranking on a survey of monthly prices for medium use of mobile phones for calls, text messaging and multimedia messaging in its 30 member states.

The report was based on comparing prices on a medium-use basis for a package of 780 voice calls, 600 short texts (SMS), and eight multimedia (MMS) messages.

Finland and Sweden are also among countries that enjoy the lowest prices for mobile phone calls. Besides the United States, Canada and Spain are charged the highest prices.

The report also found that mobile phone call prices between 2006 and 2008 fell on average by 28 percent for medium use consumers but said that text messaging continued to be a particularly lucrative market for operators.

WOW this is a shock, I miss my US free nights and weekends and it seemed like it was always cheaper... also in the US I never had to pay extra from my house phone to call a cell phone.
