THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch justice ministry and police department have issued a warning about criminal gangs hunting wild animals with specially trained dogs.

Hunting wild animals with dogs is banned in the Netherlands as it is extremely cruel. The dogs literally tear rabbits, hares and deer to pieces.

On Monday evening, a Dutch television programme broadcast a report about the practice, which mainly occurs in the south of the country. Although members of only three illegal hunting gangs have been arrested over the last few years, police say many more such gangs are active in the country.

Sometimes the meat is eaten by the dogs. At other times it's sold, though most of the people involved do it for kicks. The Christian Democrats and the Labour Party both said they were shocked by the report and said measures would have to be taken to halt the practice.
