Amsterdam – A man died and three others were injured when they jumped from the ninth floor in an attempt to avoid arrest in a police drug raid in Amsterdam zuidoost (southeast).

The man who died either jumped or fell from the ninth-floor balcony. Two of the three injured are reported to be in critical condition. Another man jumped or fell from a third floor apartment.

The police, who raided four homes in apartment blocks in the neighbourhood found large quantities of hard drugs, and arrested four other suspects.

Meanwhile, local residents have expressed anger at the way police handled the raid.

This is not the first time a person has jumped from an apartment to escape the police in the Amsterdam zuidoost district, which has a high concentration of drug dealers.

In 2007, a Ghanaian man died in a similar incident, which sparked off rioting in protest at the police operation. In January 2008, another man was injured jumping from an apartment in an attempt to avoid arrest.

The police have launched an inquiry into the circumstances of the death and injuries.
