THE NETHERLANDS - Life expectancy in the Netherlands has increased sharply in recent years.

Figures released by Statistics Netherlands show that on average, women die at 82 and men at 78. The new figures also show that the difference in life expectancy between the sexes has diminished somewhat in the past five years.

Despite the ageing population, the actual number of deaths has also dropped, particularly among people in their 70s. Statistics Netherlands says that such an extended period of reduced mortality is a new occurrence.
