The Winkler Prins cancels production on its print version due to internet competition.

20 November 2008

AMSTERDAM - The paper edition of the only surviving Dutch encyclopaedia, the Winkler Prins, is to stop production. The tenth edition was planned for the end of 2008 but the publisher decided to cancel it.

Winkler Prins says it can no longer compete with free equivalents on the internet. It also says that modern families no longer want 26 thick books in their living rooms.

The first edition of the encyclopaedia appeared in 1870. The last edition was published in the mid-1990s and cost around EUR 2,000. For a small fee, it is still possible to consult the encyclopaedia online.
