Plastic cups, cutlery and leftover food will be converted into electricity.

The Netherlands – Dutch airline KLM wants to convert much of the waste produced on its flights into energy, reports Dutch news agency ANP.

The airline, which is currently examining the feasibility of this method of recycling, intends to launch a trial in 2010 where plastic cups, cutlery and leftover food scraps will be converted into electricity and heat energy.

The electricity produced could in turn be used to load luggage into airplane cargo holds. Additional energy could also be channelled to flower greenhouses in Aalsmeer.

KLM estimates that up to 20 tonnes of rubbish a day could be generated into electricity and heat.
