Internet telephony on the rise

The number of internet telephone connections in the Netherlands rose by 2.7 percent over the past quarter. Research bureau Telecompaper reports this brings their total to more than four million – almost one Voice over Internet Protocol VoIP number for every four inhabitants. For 2011 as a whole, Telecompaper expects total VoIP numbers to increase by around 9 percent. The total of households that lack a landline and only use mobile phones also rose slightly to more than 1.3 million.

Internet telephony hasn’t toppled former state telecom company KPN from its dominant position. KPN leads the VoIP market by a 32 percent margin.
