Judges from the International Criminal Court in The Hague announced their decision on Monday to issue an arrest warrant for Moammar Gaddafi. The Libyan leader, one of his sons and his intelligence chief face charges of crimes against humanity.

Gaddafi and his regime are accused of firing on civilian demonstrators, shelling funerals and using snipers on unarmed individuals during the early days of rebel fighting in Libya.

The decision to arrest the trio is risky, Professor of International Criminal Law Geert-Jan Knoops told Dutch news radio, BNR. According to him, there has not been enough time to accurately prepare the indictment.

Gaddafi, his son Seif al-Islam Gaddafi and Abdullah al-Sanoussi are now internationally wanted criminals. However, the ICC has no police force of its own to carry out the arrests.
