Hunger striker for Iranian refugees hospitalised

An Iranian woman on hunger strike outside the US embassy in The Hague has been admitted to hospital in a critical condition. She continues to refuse food, a fellow hunger striker told the press.

The woman had been campaigning for the past 16 days, together with three other hunger strikers who are still outside the embassy, on behalf of 3500 dissident Iranian refugees in a camp in Iraq. They are asking for the camp to be brought back under US control.

Ever since the Ashraf camp was handed over to the authorities in Baghdad on 1 January 2009, the situation for the Iranians there has been precarious. In July Iraqi security guards raided the camp. Nine people were reported killed in the incident; two others are still in a coma.

The Iraqi authorities say the guards wanted to establish a police post in the camp and did not use violence, but were targeted by stone-throwing and knife-wielding residents.

Ashraf City is the base in Iraq of the Iranian opposition movement Mujahedeen Khalq. The inhabitants of the camp were assigned protection by the US-led coalition in 2003 under the Geneva Conventions.

    You state

"The Iraqi authorities say the guards wanted to establish a police post in the camp and did not use violence, but were targeted by stone-throwing and knife-wielding residents."

Video footage of the attacks show otherwise. I ask you, since when did police turn into builders and build police stations? Since when did they need axes and chains, nail embedded wooden sticks and batons to build a police station.?

This attack was a crime against humanity, a massacre of unarmed people. The Iraqi police went to Ashraf with one thing in mind - to kill and cause maximum destruction, there is little doubt about that.
