The US authorities have arrested 16 alleged hackers suspected of launching a cyber attack on the website of the PayPal company in December. A group of hackers known as Anomymous allegedly attacked the PayPal on-line payment site because it closed a donation account for the whistle-blowing WikiLeaks website.

A joint announcement by the US Justice Department and the FBI states the arrests were made in collaboration with the UK and Netherlands police. Four suspects were arrested in the Netherlands and one in the United Kingdom.

In the US, 14 suspects are accused of conspiring to ‘intentionally damage protected computers’ between 6 and 10 December in what Anonymous called 'Operation Avenge Assange'. The remaining two detainees were arrested for similar offences. The US authorities emphasised that the arrests were made in a still ongoing investigation.
