Groningen university in affirmative action

The University of Groningen has been reproached by the Equal Opportunities Commission over its decision to appoint 12 female professors.

The university created special chairs which were only available to women who were already senior university lecturers. The Commission ruled that men should also have been able to apply for the new jobs.

The newly appointed female professors will not be asked to resign their posts, but the University of Groningen has announced it will change its appointment procedures.
