Government failing in fight against child porn

The government can only fight child porn effectively when it forms part of a comprehensive policy to protect children against sexual violence.

This is the conclusion that National Rapporteur on People Trafficking Corinne Dettmeijer-Vermeulen reaches in a report that she presented to the cabinet on Wednesday.

At present the fight against child porn is regarded as primarily a cybercrime the prosecution of which falls under the responsibility of the justice ministry, whereas in Mrs Dettmeijer-Vermeulen’s view the health ministry should also play an important part.

In addition to the criminal investigation and prosecution of perpetrators, there should also be focus on prevention and identifying and providing assistance to victims. The latter three clearly fall within the remit of the health ministry.

Mrs Dettmeijer-Vermeulen argues that repressive measures alone will not suffice and that the current approach is lacking a comprehensive digital perspective in which children occupy centre stage.
