Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo will be brought before the International Criminal Court for the first time on Monday when he will face charges of crimes against humanity, the court said.

"The initial appearance of Laurent Gbagbo is scheduled for Monday 5 December at 1400," (1300 GMT) the ICC said in a statement, after he was transferred to the custody of the court in The Hague in the early hours of Wednesday.

At the first appearance, his identity will be confirmed, the charges against him and his rights will be read out under the Rome Statute, the statement added.

"At the end of this first appearance, the pre-trial chamber will set the date of the next step in the pre-trial proceedings: the hearing on the confirmation of charges," the ICC added.

Gbagbo, 66, was remanded in custody after being flown to the Netherlands on a chartered flight as the first person to be brought to account over post-election violence that killed 3,000 people since it erupted last year.

He is the first former head-of-state to face charges including rape and murder, committed by his forces in the violent aftermath of disputed presidential polls, held a year ago in the west African country.
