Frisian town plans to grow its own marijuana

Councillors in the Frisian town of Drachten have voted in favour of plans to organise the official cultivation of marijuana, website reports.

The website says the council is so fed up with the nuisance caused by illegal home growers that it plans to talk to local cannabis cafe owners to better regulate the supply.

The proposal was supported by the SP, Labour party and D66 plus two local parties. The CDA and ChristenUnie voted against.

The decision does not mean marijuana will be grown legally in Drachten, a town of some 45,000 people. First legal obstacles have to be overcome and that will involve serious lobbying in The Hague, the website says.

At the moment, the Dutch legal system turns a blind eye if people have up to four marijuana plants for their own use.
