Football: match stopped in downpour

Friday's only Premier League match was stopped halfway due to heavy rain.

Referee Eric Braamhaar stopped the Tilburg fixture between bottom-of-the-league Willem II and De Graafshap after 57 minutes with the scoreboard still 0-0.

Afterwards, the referee explained his decision, saying the players' health was at risk. He also said the pitch was so drenched that the ball could hardly roll any longer. The players, he added, were telling him the whole thing had nothing to do with football. The KNVB football association will decide whether the match will be continued at a later date or will be replayed in its entirety.
