First expat TV show in Holland

On 26 January, broadcasting company TV West is launching West International, the first TV programme for the international community in the Netherlands.

"From an idea which had been in the ether for several years, the TV show has finally become a reality,” says expat Paul Brown, originally from London, the anchor-man of the show which he describes as fun, entertaining and informative.

Regional Dutch television company TV West began work on the expat TV project two years ago, choosing production company Starsound Productions, run by Edgar Wurfbain, to produce the TV series. Because the funding municipalities are in South Holland -- The Hague Zoetermeer, Leidschendam-Voorburg and Delft -- the programme won’t feature Amsterdam, but the subject matter will be broad enough to interest all expat residents of the Netherlands, as well as Dutch residents interested in international life.

Living abroad
“It’s a real TV magazine; we’ll be touching on everything,” says Brown, “It’s about all kinds of things relevant to internationals living away from their home country such as health issues, religion, finance, schooling, entertainment.”

The 22-minute show will also do a combination of interviews with internationals as well as famous people living in the region. “We’ll be asking them exactly what they feel about living in the Netherlands, the things they like, don’t like.” says Brown.

Sharing cultures
“For instance, we’ll select an expat from a particular country, and find out what they’re up to, find out funny things that have happened to them since they arrived in Holland, things they find challenging, where they get the ingredients to cook national dishes and how to cook one of their national dishes. This way they can share a little bit of their own culture with viewers.”

Paul Brown’s (centre in photo) co-presenter Nicola Courtney (British -- right in photo) will be presenting the at home items and Cecilia Aquino (Filipino-American -- left in photo) will present a section called ‘Selling off’ which is about people who are leaving the Netherlands and a ‘surprise’ item.

Each episode of TV West International will be repeated seven times a week, Monday to Thursday at 11.30 and 22.30. But don't worry if you miss a show; you can also view them online.

“Our website is important as it will enable expats to watch the shows on the internet and give them service items surrounding the shows as well as tips and a weekly regional events calendar,” says Brown.

“People who want to participate can contact us via the website, which will also be launched in its real form on 26th January. We’ll also proactively go out there and find participants.”
