THE HAGUE - Dutch finance minister Wouter Bos has admitted for the first time that the Dutch economy could shrink in 2009. Two weeks ago, he was still predicting that the Netherlands might be able to stave off economic decline.

Bos's renewed pessimism comes in response to the latest news about the economic downturn in Germany and Great Britain.

However, he also pointed out that the Netherlands is in relatively good shape: unemployment is still low and the economy is robust enough to take a few knocks.
