Finance Minister De Jager acting dubiously

Dutch Finance Minister Jan-Kees de Jager is acting in a dubious, hypocrite and obstinate fashion at the EU talks on the Greek crisis, says political scientist Rinus van Schendelen of the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

“He is seeking a European solution while holding on to his national veto right. The effect is paralysis.” He accuses German Chancellor Angela Merkel of pursuing the same policy.

The root cause of the current crisis, Van Schendelen argues, is the fact that several EU bodies, such as the European Commission, the European Council and the European Central Bank, currently have insufficient powers.

The solution, he says, is for countries to relinquish their veto right, which would stop the Dutch finance minister from blocking progress. “We must make the aid policy more European.”

“This is bound to happen, eventually, because the current situation is, from a financial, monetary and economic perspective, far more threatening, for all EU countries, than ending their blocking or stalling tactics.”
