Villareal lept ahead in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night, beating FC Twente 3-2. The Dutch set-back was felt a little harder after PSV Eindhoven failed to advance, drawing to SL Benfica 2-2.

FC Twente was admittedly expected to work some magic at home in Enschede if they were to redeem themselves form a 5-1 defeat to Villareal in the competition’s first leg. But the Spanish team, coming into the game undefeated, could not be contained.

After promising beginning for FC Twente, Marco Rubens confirmed Villareal’s place in the semi-finals, scoring a penalty shot in the 84th minute and bringing the score 1-1. Then, Rubén Caini nailed an unbelievable goal in the game’s last minute.

The action in Enschede was not echoed in Eindhoven. After a promising two goals in the first half, PSV fell to the pressure of needing to overturn a 4-1 first-leg deficit. Benfica secured the draw and their place in the semi-finals.
