UTRECHT – Watching music videos that contain explicitly sexual material leads girls to believe that a sexual appearance is essential for women. This emerged from a survey by Tom ter Bogt, professor in popular music and youth culture at the University of Utrecht.

Ter Bogt carried out a study among 500 young people aged 13 to 16. During the experiment half of the youngsters were exposed to sexy dance and hip hop music videos. The other half were shown the same artists, but in a neutral video clip. The young people who watched the sexy videos were in general more convinced that it is important for women to appear sexy.

What was remarkable, according to the researcher, is that girls were much more affected by the videos than boys.

The researcher also noticed that boys are not particularly sensitive to their parents' tastes, except when it comes to appreciation or dislike for classical music.

Girls are sensitive to the climate in which they grow up and take on their parents', particularly their mother's, taste in certain areas.

Ter Bogt also studied interest in music and came to the conclusion that love for a particular kind of music remains stable. The fascination with particular artists can come and go, and hypes last for a longer or shorter time. But people always fall back on a number of basic preferences for types of music that are rooted in their personality.

The researchers also say there is a connection between musical preference and personality. Young people who like top forty music or hip hop/R&B tend to be more extraverted and pleasant to others. Rock fans are less extraverted and sloppier, but more open to new experiences. And classical music fans are more pleasant, detail-oriented, more open to new experiences and somewhat less emotionally stable.
