Expat families have a Jolly afternoon

Expatica's 'Jolly Afternoon' went down a treat with the children making cookies and the adults sampling fine Italian fare while being entertained by some 'funny folk' from Easy laughs.

Baking awaySunday 14 December we had the first Expatica family gathering in Amsterdam: A Jolly Afternoon, and Jolly it was.

The children rolled up their sleeves and got to  making and decorating their own cookies while the parents, with suitably sophisticated refreshments, were entertained by comedians. Laughter sure filled the air.

Blue Umbrella, day care services for expatriates, made a special Kiddie’s Corner for the little ones which boasted a teeny kitchen, a tent filled with animals and a train track. Although I was tempted to join the tots in their play paradise, Blue Umbrella had professional babysitters in place, so to “play with the big people” was the only option.

Watching the showBeing with the mums and dads turned out to be quite a geography lesson; they were an international bunch and eager to meet other expats in town; especially one couple who'd only landed in the Netherlands three weeks previously!  Another expat, who'd been in the Netherlands for 20 years, had popped in to meet some fellow internationls. He mentioned that all his current friends and kin were Dutch and he needed a break!

Expat focus by Easy Laughs teamWith the help of the audience,  international comedy group Easylaughs performed improvised scenes based on the suggestions from the audience, even coaxing a few on stage to take part in the show.

Cookies were baked and consumed and a few easy laughs later it was time to wish one another a Merry Christmas and head off into the icy night.

We are looking forward to more Expatica family events in 2009 and hope you'll joini us!
