Emergency phone line for animals opens

An emergency telephone number has been set up for the animals. People who witness an accident, animal abuse or neglect can ring 114 in the Netherlands from today.

The alarm line is run by the police and calls are evaluated by specially trained police officers. If necessary regional police officers will be sent to the scene.

The emergency line is part of the government’s drive to tackle animal abuse. At the request of the Freedom Party, 500 special animal cops are to be trained during this cabinet period. At the moment 125 police dog handlers are the first to be trained. The Public Prosecution Office has decided to demand tougher sentences for offences against animals. It has also ordered an inquiry into cases of sadism against animals and cases which have caused a public outcry.
