Dutch schools spend EUR 6 million to hire mid-professionals as teachers.

The Hague – The EUR 6 million fund allocated to helping schools hire professionals making a mid-career switch has been very effective, announced Dutch Deputy Education Minister Marja van Bijsterveldt.

The fund, which was made available earlier this year, was introduced as schools are expecting huge teacher shortages in the near future. It aims to stimulate people from other sectors to switch to working in the education industry.

Professionals who are not in the education industry often earn more than teachers of the same age. Schools can then apply for a subsidy that was taken from the fund to match the salaries of their prospective teachers.

Many schools have used the facility, leaving the fund all but depleted.

Professionals who make a mid-career switch are informally referred to as "side-entrance" teachers.
The scheme allows the new recruits to begin teaching even before they have completed their mandatory qualification course, from which they are not exempted despite their previous work experience.
Two-thirds of the "side-entrance" schoolteachers find a job in secondary education, while one-third of them teach in mid-level vocational training colleges.
